Set Up a Limiter Device After the Utility on the Master Track

Different limiter plugins are designed with different uses in mind. Some start to push down the signal as it approaches 0dB, some are very transparent and only crack down once they hit zero. Some include headroom and can handle overshooting samples, others require a nice, quiet signal before they gain it up. You can use Live’s ‘Limiter’, but you will find a lot of the time that you have to pull your utility volume back quite a bit to avoid distortion at the limiter stage. If you have a great quality limiter such as Waves L2, that’s even better. It’s very important that you use a limiter that will leave everything under its ‘ceiling’ or ‘threshold’ level untouched. Limiters with a ‘brickwall’ setting are what you’re looking for. Some limiters work with advanced modes that begin to squash the audio as it approaches the ceiling, rather than actually waiting until the volume hits the ceiling first. This kind of limiter is quite musical, and very useful when mastering some types of tracks, but it’s not good for mashups. It will push the dynamics around even if there is only one track playing through it, whereas we don’t want to start limiting the audio until we have to.

If you use a brickwall limiter such as the L2, set your ceiling value to –0.2 dB, and leave the gain at 0dB. Stick with ‘auto’ release time, if your limiter has one, otherwise set it around 1 second.

If you’re looking for a free option, rather than using Live’s Limiter, try ‘Limiter No.6’ by Vladg Sound. It does a good job of keeping things under control without sacrificing too much volume.
